HOW TO SELECT A PHOTO: Chose a photo that is clear, with the person’s face intact. Choose a photo with a natural background as it gives the best result.
IMAGE CONTENT: Bust = Head and Neck. Head & Shoulders = Head and chest.
REPLACING THE BACKGROUND: Backgrounds and solid colours are shown below. If the background is to be removed, consideration should be given to the hairline. Wispy hair is hard to cut around and the result can look quite artificial. Note: Original backgrounds give the best results.
SIZE OF THE ORIGINAL PHOTO: A basic rule is, the higher the resolution (DPI: dots per inch), the better the result. For example, once the original photo is resized/cropped to the actual size needed, the DPI should be at least 300.
DIGITAL Vs PAPER: If you have the original photo, we get the best quality with our professional scanning equipment. If it is a digital image, take into account the criteria given above and note that phone cameras can give poor/average quality and may be blurry.
SCANNING: When you are scanning the original photo, adjust the scanning area so that only the person required is within the scanning box. We don’t want the whole scanner bed (ie. the photo surrounded by the white area of the scanner cover) as this increases the size of the file being sent. Don’t worry about trying to eliminate objects or other people near the person, we will do that. Before you send the file make sure that when it is resized to the required ceramic size that the resolution of the image is at least 300 DPI.
SHAPE AND ORIENTATION: (Oval / Rectangular, Portrait / Landscape): For a single person, the shape usually chosen is “Oval”. When possible, with couples or inanimate objects, best results are achieved with “Rectangular” & “Landscape” options as more of the image is shown.
PROOFS: On request, a proof of the final ceramic can be emailed (There is a cost for this service). The final ceramic colour may vary to the proof due to the manufacturing process of transferring the image on to the ceramic blank.
